Robert A. Young is President and CEO of Advanced Nanotechnology Solutions, Inc. (ANS).

Previously, Dr. Young was President and CEO of Tessera Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSRA), a public company which is the world’s leading semiconductor interconnect technology company and the producer of high-performance miniature optical systems. He was the founding investor in Tessera and served on the Board of Directors for 20 years, including four years as Chairman and 17 years as Chairman of the Audit Committee.

Before Tessera, Bob was a senior partner at Dillon Read, an investment bank. He was the Managing General Partner of Dillon Read’s venture capital funds from 1987–1994, investing in early-stage companies in information technology, biotechnology, energy and financial services. Bob’s personally directed investments have included initial seed investments in SanDisk, Tessera, Virtual Machine Works and Team Bank. From 1991–1995, he also served on the advisory board of Barings Private Equity Partners, a global private equity group headquartered in London and he was an advisor to PolyTechnos, a European venture capital firm headquartered in Munich. Bob started his career with IBM where, over an 18-year period, he held a number of management and executive positions across engineering, sales, marketing and general management. His last position at IBM was as President, IBM Instruments, a fully integrated global company with operations in the US and several European countries. IBM Instruments’ products consisted of a broad range of leading-edge scientific instrumentation and real-time scientific computers.

Bob was a Director of ATI Technologies (NASDAQ: ATYT), a leading producer of 3D graphics and multimedia products until its merger with AMD in 2006, in which he played an instrumental role. Dr. Young is also an investor and Director of several private technology companies: DigiLens, which has holographic optical waveguide technology for Augmented Reality and Heads Up Displays; Open-Xchange, which offers open source software services and cloud computing; Cryptowerk, which produces enterprise software utilizing ultra-high performance blockchain technology; Unify Square, which offers enterprise software and services for unified communications — specifically, analytics and management tools for Microsoft’s Skype for Business; Shocase, a social network exclusively for marketing professionals; Jatheon Technologies, which produces unstructured digital communication archiving systems; and Motivo, a company involved with extreme combinatorics, tera-scale analytics and machine learning initially being applied to dramatically increase early semiconductor manufacturing yields.

Currently, Bob makes personal private equity/venture capital investments through IRT, Inc. His primary areas of his interest are in information technology: semiconductors, software, computational systems and imaging.

Dr. Young has served several terms on the visiting committees at MIT of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and also the Department of Chemistry. He holds a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from MIT.
